Nutritional Benefits from Fatty Acids in Organic and Grass-Fed Beef.
Livestock production is under increasing scrutiny as a component of the food supply chain with a large impact on greenhouse gas emissions. Amidst growing calls to reduce industrial ruminant production, there is room to consider differences in meat quality and nutritional benefits of organic and/or pasture-based management systems. Access to forage, whether fresh or conserved, is a key influencing factor for meat fatty acid profile, and there is increasing evidence that pasture access is particularly beneficial for meat’s nutritional quality. These composition differences ultimately impact nutrient supply to consumers of conventional, organic and grass-fed meat. For this review, predicted fatty acid supply from three consumption scenarios were modelled: i. average UK population National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) (<128 g/week) red meat consumption, ii. red meat consumption suggested by the UK National Health Service (NHS) (<490 g/week) and iii. red meat consumption suggested by the Eat Lancet Report (<98 g/week). The results indicate average consumers would receive more of the beneficial fatty acids for human health (especially the essential omega-3, alpha-linolenic acid) from pasture-fed beef, produced either organically or conventionally.…

Fatty Acid Composition of Grain- and Grass-Fed Beef and Their Nutritional Value and Health Implication.
Beef contains functional fatty acids such as conjugated linoleic acid and long-chain fatty acids. This review summarizes results from studies comparing the fatty acid composition of beef from cattle fed either grass or grain-based feed. Since functional lipid components are contributed through dietary consumption of beef, the fatty acid composition is reported on mg/100 g of meat basis rather than on a percentage of total fat basis. Beef from grass-fed contains lesser total fat than that from grain-fed in all breeds of cattle. Reduced total fat content also influences the fatty acid composition of beef. A 100 g beef meat from grass-fed cattle contained 2,773 mg less total saturated fatty acids (SFA) than that from the same amount of grain-fed. Grass-fed also showed a more favorable SFA lipid profile containing less cholesterol-raising fatty acids (C12:0 to C16:0) but contained a lesser amount of cholesterol-lowering C18:0 than grain-fed beef. In terms of essential fatty acids, grass-fed beef showed greater levels of trans-vaccenic acid and long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA; EPA, DPA, DHA) than grain-fed beef. Grass-fed beef also contains an increased level of total n-3 PUFA which reduced the n-6 to n-3 ratio thus can offer more health benefits than grain-fed. The findings signify that grass-fed beef could exert protective effects against a number of diseases ranging from cancer to cardiovascular disease (CVD) as evidenced by the increased functional omega-3 PUFA and decreased undesirable SFA. Although grain-fed beef showed lesser EPA, DPA, and DHA, consumers should be aware that greater portions of grain-fed beef could also achieve a similar dietary intake of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. Noteworthy, grain-fed beef contained higher total monounsaturated fatty acid that have beneficial roles in the amelioration of CVD risks than grass-fed beef. Nutritional composition of beef: a comparison of commercial North American grass- and grain-finishing systems.
Beef's fatty acid and mineral profile is influenced by finishing diets, yet the nutritional variability within both grass- and grain-fed beef samples from commercial operations remains underexplored. Understanding potential differences is important for producers and consumers. This study profiled grass- and grain-fed beef from commercial North American producers and retailers, and evaluated relationships among grazing practices, forage quality, soil characteristics, and beef fatty acid and mineral composition. Beef samples (grass-fed, n = 253; grain-fed, n = 84), along with forage and soil samples where possible, were collected from 108 commercial producers and retailers. Fatty acids were analyzed using gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID), and minerals were quantified using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Statistical models evaluated differences and correlations between and within finishing practices using Welch's t-test and Pearson's correlation analysis. Grass-fed beef had a lower omega-6:3 ratio (2.14 vs. 8.28, P < 0.001) and higher concentrations of the fatty acids alpha-linolenic acid (ALA; 0.99 vs. 0.27%), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 0.28 vs. 0.07%), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA; 0.41 vs. 0.17%), conjugated linoleic acid (CLA; 0.49 vs. 0.31%), and the minerals calcium (9.26 vs. 3.08 mg/100 g), copper (0.253 vs. 0.129 mg/100 g), iron (2.29 vs. 1.92 mg/100 g), and selenium (0.012 vs. 0.002 mg/100 g) compared with grain-fed beef (all P < 0.05). However, considerable nutritional variation exists, particularly within grass-finished beef, with omega-6:3 ratios ranging from 0.62 to 11.45. Animals finished on biodiverse pastures exhibited fatty acid profiles characterized by higher omega-3 to total polyunsaturated FA content, resulting in a higher omega balance (r = 0.30, P = 0.02). However, some grass-fed samples, particularly several retail-purchased samples, displayed fatty acid compositions with relatively low omega-3 content, resulting in an omega balance similar to grain-fed beef. These findings highlight the need for clearer guidance on "grass-fed" management definitions and more transparent labeling that reflects measurable nutritional attributes, such as omega-3 content, omega-6:3 ratio, and/or omega balance.…

Indoor Air Pollution and the Health of Vulnerable Groups: A Systematic Review Focused on Particulate Matter (PM), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Their Effects on Children and People with Pre-Existing Lung Disease.
Air pollution affects health, but much of the focus to this point has been on outdoor air. Higher indoor pollution is anticipated due to increasingly energy-efficient and less leaky buildings together with more indoor activities. Studies of indoor air pollution focusing on children and people with respiratory disease from the database Web of Science (1991-2021) were systemically reviewed according to the PRISMA guidelines, with 69 studies included in the final selection. Emissions from building materials affected indoor air quality, and ventilation also had an influence. The main indoor air pollutants are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Particulate Matter (PM). PM sources included smoking, cooking, heating, candles, and insecticides, whereas sources of coarse particles were pets, housework and human movements. VOC sources included household products, cleaning agents, glue, personal care products, building materials and vehicle emissions. Formaldehyde levels were particularly high in new houses. Personal exposure related to both indoor and outdoor pollutant levels, highlighting home characteristics and air exchange rates as important factors. Temperature, humidity, educational level, air purifiers and time near sources were also related to personal exposure. There was an association between PM and Fractional exhaled Nitric Oxide (FeNO), lung function, oxygen saturation, childhood asthma and symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. High VOCs were associated with upper airways and asthma symptoms and cancer. Effective interventional studies for PM in the future might focus on human behavior together with air purifiers and increased ventilation, whereas VOC interventions might center more on building materials and household products, alongside purification and ventilation.…

The CARMUCI Study Design: A Double-Blind, Cross-Over Sham-Controlled Trial of Indoor Air Purification in People With Cystic Fibrosis and Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia.
<h4>Background</h4>People with cystic fibrosis (pwCF) and primary ciliary dyskinesia (pwPCD) are particularly vulnerable to the harmful effects of air pollution due to the impairment of mucociliary clearance (MCC). Despite growing evidence supporting the use of indoor air purification in common lung conditions, its role in CF and PCD remains unexplored.<h4>Methods</h4>The Clean Air for Rare MCC dIsorders (CARMUCI) study is a randomized, double-blind, cross-over, sham-controlled trial aiming to evaluate the impact of indoor air purification on the respiratory health of pwCF and pwPCD (children and adults) in Cyprus. Sixty-two participants will receive two 3-month intervention periods using identical-looking air purifiers: one 3-month period with active filtration via high-efficiency filters and one 3-month period with a sham unit. Primary outcome will be a mean difference of at least 10% change in lung clearance index, and secondary outcomes will include spirometry, pulmonary exacerbations, inflammatory biomarkers, and health-related quality of life. Exposure to indoor particulate matter (PM) will be continuously monitored using device operation logs and wearable activity trackers.<h4>Results</h4>By August 2025, 24 pwCF and 26 pwPCD (20 females, age: 31 [16.1] years) have been enrolled. CARMUCI continues enrollment and will start data collection in September 2025. Results are expected to provide novel evidence on the efficacy of air purification in reducing indoor PM exposure and improving respiratory outcomes in people with chronic MCC disorders.<h4>Conclusion</h4>CARMUCI trial first results are expected in late-2027 and may inform future clinical guidelines and environmental health strategies for managing rare MCC disorders.…

Installing Air Purifiers in the Homes of Children With Severe Asthma: Outcomes and Family Perspectives From a Feasibility Study.
<h4>Background</h4>Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) contributes to asthma morbidity, particularly affecting children and young people (CYP) from socioeconomically deprived backgrounds. Air purification devices may improve IAQ and asthma symptoms, but real-world evidence remains limited.<h4>Aim</h4>To assess the feasibility, acceptability, and potential clinical impact of installing an air purifier in the homes of CYP with severe asthma.<h4>Methods</h4>An unblinded feasibility study recruiting children ≤ 15 years with a confirmed diagnosis of asthma attending a regional severe asthma service. Participants selected by computer-generated random allocation. An air purifier (manufactured by Rensair Ltd.) was installed in each home, with instructions to operate continuously on "quiet mode" for 1-year, and operating costs covered. Data on asthma management and symptoms, quality of life, and qualitative feedback were collected and analysed using thematic analysis.<h4>Results</h4>Twenty CYP were recruited (mean age: 11.2 (SD: 2.68), 60% boys). Thematic analysis of feedback from CYP and families indicated high acceptability and perceived improvements in night-time symptoms and IAQ. Over this 12-month study period, the mean annual number of systemic corticosteroid courses decreased from 4.2 to 2.15 (p = 0.006) from the previous year, and unscheduled primary care visits fell from 4.0 to 1.8 (p = 0.02). Trends towards marginal improvements in asthma control test mean scores (13.3 to.14.2 for < 12 years (p = 0.2), 15.5 to 16.8 for ≥12 years (p = 0.6) and quality of life scores were observed (54.6 to 62.4 for total score (p = 0.08), 17.2 to 19.8 for emotional domain (p = 0.07) and 13.6 to 13.9 for activity domain (p = 0.7)), with a statistically significant increase in the symptom domain of the Mini-PAQLQ (23.8 to 28.8 p = 0.04).<h4>Conclusions</h4>Air purifiers may offer a feasible, acceptable, and potentially beneficial intervention for children with severe asthma, particularly in settings with poor IAQ. TwinAIR health study: protocol for a European multi-centred, longitudinal study on indoor environmental quality (IEQ) related health and well-being.
BACKGROUND: The term indoor environmental quality (IEQ) encompasses indoor air quality (IAQ), temperature, humidity, noise, and light. As people spend approximately 90% of their time indoors, at work, school, home, or during travel, understanding the relationship between IEQ and health is essential for health promotion, disease prevention, and sustainable building design and management. As part of the EU-funded TwinAIR project, the TwinAIR health study is a multi-centered, longitudinal investigation of how IEQ factors influence health and well-being across diverse European indoor spaces. This protocol describes a holistic study design integrating subjective and objective IEQ and health assessments and evaluating potential IEQ intervention effects. METHODS: The TwinAIR health study will recruit and longitudinally follow 900 participants across 45 indoor spaces in five European countries (Germany, Greece, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom), spanning work, study, leisure, and transport settings. Continuously measured IEQ parameters, including light, noise, temperature, humidity, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), carbon dioxide (CO2), particulate matter (PM), particle number (PN), typical particle size (TPS), total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), and formaldehyde (HCHO), are assessed using advanced sensors with one-minute resolution. Sensor data are integrated with software-based digital twins and a data management platform. Health and well-being data include questionnaires assessing IEQ perceptions, respiratory and allergic symptoms, general health, mental health, somatization, well-being, and productivity, alongside objective measures including spirometry and skin and nasal samples for microbiome and resistome analyses. Air purification interventions are implemented in selected indoor spaces. The longitudinal design enables evaluation of intervention effects on IEQ and occupant health and well-being. DISCUSSION: The TwinAIR health study addresses the growing impact of indoor environments on health and well-being and aims to elucidate the interactions between IEQ parameters, occupant behaviours, building management practices, and health outcomes, an area that remains comparatively understudied relative to outdoor environmental research. The study will generate actionable insights for creating and managing healthier indoor spaces using innovative sensing technologies and comprehensive health assessments. Findings will inform evidence-based strategies to guide healthier indoor space design and management in Europe and beyond.…

Ultra-processed foods and health: a comprehensive review.
Dramatically increasing trends in consumption of ultra-processed foods have been reported across the globe. Public concern about the health consequences of ultra-processed foods is high. This manuscript provides a comprehensive review of trends in global consumption of ultra-processed foods, dietary nutrient profile of ultra-processed foods, demographic, socioeconomic, psychological, and behavioral characteristics of ultra-processed food consumers, current evidence from longitudinal studies at the population level on the association between ultra-processed foods consumption and major health outcomes (including all-cause and cause-specific mortality, cardiovascular disease, overweight and obesity, body composition and fat deposition, diabetes, cancer, and gastrointestinal and other diseases), potential mechanisms linking ultra-processed foods with these outcomes (nutrient displacement, factors that influence adiposity, and processing), and challenges and future research directions. The global trends in consumption of ultra-processed foods, the generally unfavorable nutrient profile of ultra-processed foods, the characteristics of ultra-processed food consumers, the accumulating longitudinal studies associating ultra-processed foods with major health outcomes, and the uncertainties and complexities in putative mechanisms all highlight the need for future high-quality epidemiologic and mechanistic investigations on this topic. Ultra-Processed Foods and Health Outcomes: A Narrative Review.
The nutrition literature and authoritative reports increasingly recognise the concept of ultra-processed foods (UPF), as a descriptor of unhealthy diets. UPFs are now prevalent in diets worldwide. This review aims to identify and appraise the studies on healthy participants that investigated associations between levels of UPF consumption and health outcomes. This involved a systematic search for extant literature; integration and interpretation of findings from diverse study types, populations, health outcomes and dietary assessments; and quality appraisal. Of 43 studies reviewed, 37 found dietary UPF exposure associated with at least one adverse health outcome. Among adults, these included overweight, obesity and cardio-metabolic risks; cancer, type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases; irritable bowel syndrome, depression and frailty conditions; and all-cause mortality. Among children and adolescents, these included cardio-metabolic risks and asthma. No study reported an association between UPF and beneficial health outcomes. Most findings were derived from observational studies and evidence of plausible biological mechanisms to increase confidence in the veracity of these observed associations is steadily evolving. There is now a considerable body of evidence supporting the use of UPFs as a scientific concept to assess the 'healthiness' of foods within the context of dietary patterns and to help inform the development of dietary guidelines and nutrition policy actions.…

Ultra-processed foods and human health: the main thesis and the evidence.
This first paper in a three-part Lancet Series combines narrative and systematic reviews with original analyses and meta-analyses to assess three hypotheses concerning a dietary pattern based on ultra-processed foods. The first hypothesis-that this pattern is globally displacing long-established diets centred on whole foods and their culinary preparation as dishes and meals-is supported by decades of national food intake and purchase surveys, and recent global sales data. The second-that this pattern results in deterioration of diet quality, especially in relation to chronic disease prevention-is confirmed by national food intake surveys, large cohorts, and interventional studies showing gross nutrient imbalances; overeating driven by high energy density, hyper-palatability, soft texture, and disrupted food matrices; reduced intake of health-protective phytochemicals; and increased intake of toxic compounds, endocrine disruptors, and potentially harmful classes and mixtures of food additives. The third and final hypothesis-that this pattern increases the risk of multiple diet-related chronic diseases through various mechanisms-is substantiated by more than 100 prospective studies, meta-analyses, randomised controlled trials, and mechanistic studies, covering adverse outcomes across nearly all organ systems. The totality of the evidence supports the thesis that displacement of long-established dietary patterns by ultra-processed foods is a key driver of the escalating global burden of multiple diet-related chronic diseases. Two companion papers in this Series specify policy actions and wider public health strategies to promote, protect, and support diets based on fresh and minimally processed foods and prevent their displacement by ultra-processed foods.…

Ultra-processed food consumption and cancer risk: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Ultra-processed foods (UPF) have become a staple of the diet in many countries, concomitant with increases in non-communicable diseases including cancer. The aim of this systematic literature review was to evaluate associations between the consumption of UPF and cancer risk. A systematic literature search for observational studies investigating the association between cancer risk and UPF consumption, determined by the NOVA classification system, was performed. Random-effects meta-analyses were conducted. Independent review and risk of bias assessment was performed independently by the authors using the National Institutes of Health's Study Quality Assessment Tools. Eleven reports were identified, including eight retrospective case-control studies and three prospective cohorts. The outcome was risk of total cancer and/or one or more of the following cancers: colorectal, breast, prostate, pancreatic, chronic lymphocytic leukemia and central nervous system tumors. Nine studies reported a significant positive association between UPF intake and all the assessed cancers except prostate, after adjustment for confounding factors including obesity and total energy intake. A 10% increment in the diet's proportion of UPF was associated with increased risk of overall cancer (HR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.07 to 1.18) and breast cancer (HR = 1.11, 95% CI 1.01 to 1.21). Different sleep patterns during the COVID-19 pandemic: association with mood, exercise and light exposure.
The aim was to evaluate the sleep-wake cycle pattern, mood, perceived stress and some behaviors, such as physical exercise and exposure to natural light of college students during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is a cross-sectional study conducted between June and August 2020 using an electronic form provided by Google. The sample consisted of undergraduate students aged between 18 and 30 years old and residents of the northeast region of Brazil. The students generally had sleepiness and poor sleep quality, high levels of anxiety, mild to moderate depressive symptoms and moderate perceived stress. Some of these aspects were worse in women. The college students showed three sleep patterns: one group had good sleep quality without excessive daytime sleepiness; another group had poor sleep quality, but no excessive daytime sleepiness; and a third group had high daytime sleepiness, and less expressive sleep quality impairment. Greater exposure to sunlight and practicing physical exercise predominated in individuals with better sleep quality, suggesting that they are protective factors. In addition, excessive daytime sleepiness and poor sleep quality were separately associated with higher anxiety, depression and stress perception levels, proving to be important aspects for care in order to favor mental health during the pandemic. In conclusion, it is suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic affected the sleep of college students in a heterogeneous way. The differentiated sleep patterns are associated with exposure to natural light and exercising.…

Moderating Effect of Daylight Exposure on the Relationship Between Physical Activity and Sleep in Patients with Upper Digestive Cancer: An Exploratory Study.
To examine the moderating effect of daylight exposure on physical activity and objective sleep quality, using wearable actigraph devices. We recruited 324 patients with either gastric or esophageal cancer. Actigraphs were used to measure all objective data including daylight exposure, physical activity, and sleep quality. Pearson's correlation coefficients were used to examine the relationships among demographic data, disease attributes, physical activity, daylight exposure, and sleep. The Hayes PROCESS macro with the regression bootstrapping method was employed to analyze the moderating effect of daylight exposure on the relationship between physical activity and sleep. Sleep efficiency correlated positively with physical activity, while "wake after sleep onset" correlated negatively with physical activity and mean lux. Mean lux and light >500 lux significantly moderated the association between physical activity and sleep efficiency (P = .002 in both cases). Similarly, mean lux and light >500 lux significantly moderated the association between physical activity and "wake after sleep onset" (P = .002 and .001, respectively). Both average daylight exposure and time of exposure to >500 lux act as moderators of physical activity and objective sleep quality in patients with gastric or esophageal cancer. Healthcare practitioners should encourage patients with cancer to engage in daily outdoor physical activity. Further intervention studies are needed to verify the combined effect of daytime light exposure and physical activity on improving sleep quality. The Impact of Sunlight and Artificial Light at Night on Sleep Stages: Evidence From a 7-Day Sensor-Based Observational Study.
<h4>Background</h4>Exposure to circadian entrainers, such as sunlight, positively impacts sleep architecture, while exposure before bedtime to circadian disruptors, such as artificial light and smartphone use, can negatively affect sleep. However, real-world evidence from longitudinal observational studies that simultaneously capture these factors alongside electroencephalography-derived sleep stages remains limited.<h4>Objective</h4>This study aimed to investigate the effects of specific environmental and behavioral factors on sleep metrics and architecture by using sensor-based measurements over 7 consecutive days. Specifically, it examined day-to-day associations between (1) daytime sunlight exposure and (2) prebedtime artificial light exposure and smartphone use with selected sleep outcomes on the following night.<h4>Methods</h4>A total of 21 participants from the Jerusalem metropolitan area were monitored continuously using the Dreem wearable electroencephalography for sleep staging, HOBO data loggers for light exposure, the wGT3X+ triaxial accelerometer for physical activity, and a dedicated mobile app to record smartphone usage. Sleep outcomes included total sleep time (TST), sleep onset latency (SOL), and the proportions of light sleep (N1) and deep sleep (N3). Sunlight exposure was defined as the number of hours above 1000 lux during daytime, and artificial light and smartphone use before bedtime were quantified as the duration of exposure accumulated in the 2 hours preceding sleep onset. Linear mixed-effects models with a random intercept at the individual level estimated the associations between these exposures and next-night sleep outcomes, adjusting for step count and other individual covariates.<h4>Results</h4>The average TST was 420 (SD 85) minutes, and SOL averaged 17.6 (SD 18) minutes. Light sleep (N1) represented 6.6% (SD 2.1%) of sleep, and deep sleep (N3) accounted for 20.1% (SD 7.6%). Each additional hour of daytime sunlight exposure was associated with an increase of 10.67 (95% CI 0.6-20.7) minutes in TST the following night and with a 0.3 (95% CI -0.6 to -0.0) percentage-point decrease in light sleep (N1) percentage. No associations were found between evening artificial light exposure and sleep outcomes, while each minute of smartphone use before bedtime was linked to an increase in SOL of 0.2 (95% CI 0.0-0.4) minutes.<h4>Conclusions</h4>These findings emphasize the importance of daylight exposure for circadian alignment and the potential sleep-disruptive effects of evening digital engagement. This study demonstrates the feasibility and value of integrating wearable electroencephalography and environmental and behavioral sensors in naturalistic settings to uncover behavioral and environmental correlates of sleep architecture.…
